I avoided looking at my credit card statements for three months straight. Each time the email notification popped up, I’d quickly swipe it away, promising myself I’d check it “tomorrow.” My financial avoidance wasn’t just about the numbers – it was about something deeper.
What I was really avoiding was a pattern. A repeating cycle of scarcity thinking that had followed me since childhood. My relationship with money wasn’t just financial – it was karmic.
Karmic debt doesn’t work like Mastercard or Visa. It’s not something with a fixed interest rate or minimum monthly payment. It’s the energetic imbalance we carry from our past actions, beliefs, and patterns. And until we clear it, we keep hitting the same abundance ceiling over and over again.
What the Heck Is Karmic Debt, Really?
Karmic debt is less mystical than it sounds. Think of it as the energetic equivalent of those subscription services you forgot you signed up for but keep getting charged for month after month.
It’s the patterns, beliefs, and behaviors around abundance that you inherited or developed that no longer serve you. Maybe it’s the belief that “money is the root of all evil” that you picked up from a religious upbringing. Or perhaps it’s the pattern of undercharging for your services because deep down, you don’t feel worthy of more.
These aren’t random thoughts – they’re energetic agreements you’ve made with yourself and the universe. And like any debt, they accumulate interest over time if left unaddressed.
The Law of Compensation, which we’ve been exploring this week, tells us that we receive in proportion to what we give. But karmic debt can short-circuit this natural flow. We might be giving value, but if we’re carrying old patterns that say “I don’t deserve to receive,” we create blockages in our abundance pipeline.

The Weird Signs You’re Carrying Karmic Debt
Let’s do a quick check-in. Do you recognize any of these signals in your life?
– You keep attracting the same financial situations (like always hovering around the same income level despite your efforts) – There’s a pattern of almost succeeding then watching opportunities fall through – You feel guilty when good things come to you easily – You sabotage your success just as things start going well – You have a nagging feeling that you need to “pay your dues” before you can truly succeed – Certain phrases like “money doesn’t grow on trees” or “we can’t afford that” replay in your mind automatically
These aren’t coincidences or character flaws. They’re signs that you’re carrying karmic patterns around abundance that need clearing.
We worked with someone last year who kept hitting the same income ceiling of $75,000. Every time she’d approach that number in her business, mysterious expenses would pop up, clients would disappear, or she’d suddenly lose motivation. After some exploration, we discovered she was subconsciously honoring a childhood belief that making more money than her father (who maxed out at about $75,000) would somehow be disloyal to him.
That’s karmic debt in action – invisible but powerful.
Repayment Plan: Clearing Your Karmic Financial History
Unlike financial debt, you can’t just transfer your karmic balance to another spiritual credit card with a lower interest rate. You’ve got to clear it systematically.
First step: Awareness. You can’t clear what you can’t see. Take some quiet time with a journal and ask yourself:
– What did I learn about money growing up? – What phrases about wealth did I hear repeatedly? – Where do I feel unworthy of receiving? – What patterns keep repeating in my financial life?
Write without filtering. The act of bringing these patterns to light immediately reduces their power.
Next, forgiveness work is essential. And yes, it might sound a bit woo-woo, but it’s actually quite practical. You need to forgive:
– Those who installed limiting beliefs about abundance in you – Yourself for choices made from scarcity – Past situations where you gave away your power around money
This isn’t about excusing harmful behavior. It’s about releasing the energetic charge so you’re not dragging that old baggage into your new abundance story.
I found it helpful to write letters (that I never sent) to people who influenced my money beliefs. One was to my grandmother who always said “money is dirty.” I thanked her for trying to protect me from materialism, then respectfully explained I was choosing a new belief system around abundance.
The Reciprocity Reset: Give More to Receive More
Once you’ve identified and begun clearing your karmic debt, you can realign with the Law of Compensation more effectively.
Remember, this universal law states that we receive in proportion to the value we give. But many of us give while subconsciously blocking our ability to receive.
Try this daily practice: Before bed, ask yourself two questions:
1. How did I add value to others today? 2. How did I allow myself to receive today?
Many of us are much better at the first question than the second. We’ll happily list all the ways we helped, served, and contributed. But when it comes to receiving, we draw a blank or feel uncomfortable even thinking about it.
Reciprocity requires both giving AND receiving. By consciously practicing both, you’re retraining your energy field to allow abundance to flow in both directions.
Breaking the Cycle – When Karmic Patterns Run in Families
Some of the toughest karmic debt to clear is generational. If you come from a family where everyone struggles financially, breaking that pattern can trigger all sorts of complex feelings – survivor’s guilt, fear of rejection, worry about belonging.
One powerful exercise is to create a financial family tree. Draw out your family going back as far as you can, and note what you know about each person’s relationship with money and success. Look for patterns, limiting beliefs, and trauma responses.
Then – and this is crucial – consciously decide which patterns you’re ending with you. Make it formal. Some people even do a ritual where they write down the patterns they’re releasing and burn the paper.
This isn’t just symbolic – it’s a clear message to your subconscious that you’re making a deliberate choice to shift the energy.
Your Service As Karmic Clearing
One of the fastest ways to clear karmic debt around abundance is to increase the value you provide to others. This directly engages the Law of Compensation in a positive way.
Ask yourself: How can I serve at a higher level? Where am I holding back my gifts? What would it look like if I fully expressed my talents without fear?
Often, the very act of focusing outward on how you can contribute more breaks the inward spiral of scarcity thinking.
This isn’t about working harder or doing more. It’s about removing the internal blocks that prevent you from offering your highest value.
Sometimes this means raising your rates to match your true worth. Other times it means stepping into visibility so more people can benefit from what you offer. Or it might mean developing new skills that allow you to serve at an even higher level.

Receiving Is a Spiritual Practice
Let’s wrap this with something practical you can do today. Find a comfortable seat, close your eyes, and imagine abundance flowing toward you. Notice any discomfort, resistance or urge to push it away. Don’t judge – just observe.
Now imagine that by fully receiving, you’re actually completing a circuit that allows more abundance to flow to others. Your receiving isn’t selfish – it’s necessary for the whole system to work.
Clearing karmic debt isn’t a one-time event but an ongoing practice. Each time you choose a new response to an old trigger, you’re loosening the grip of past patterns.
Remember that the universe operates on balance. When you clear what blocks you from receiving your due compensation, you’re not just helping yourself – you’re restoring harmony to the entire system of giving and receiving that powers our world.
And sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is simply look at your bank account with compassion instead of fear. That’s where I started, and it changed everything.
